ASPE has two major educational programs for members and non-members. The first is for newcomers to the estimating field in which they can achieve a “Certificate in Construction Estimating”. To achieve this certificate you must pass five ASPE online estimating classes.

The second is for experienced estimators wishing to achieve the highest level of accreditation. This is the ASPE Certification program. Upon completing and passing the required prerequisites the individual will earn the honor of the title of Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) and will be granted the right to use the title after his or her name.

After completing one or both of these programs the education continues. At the local chapter level ASPE hold seminars for members and non-members alike. These range from two-hour single topic meetings to seminars two days long covering a variety of construction and estimating topics.

Certificate in Construction Estimating

To qualify you will need to pass five ASPE online estimating classes.

Required classes:
  • Estimating and Bidding I
  • Estimating and Bidding II
  • Construction Materials & Processes
Complete two of the following classes:
  • Introduction to Construction estimating
  • Construction Blueprint Reading
  • Construction Math

Certified Professional Estimator

  1. Experience—Minimum of Five Years of on the job estimating experience.
  2. Submit Applications and Fees - Candidate’s professional evaluation application is to be submitted to the Society Business Office prior to the submittal deadline. Late applications will not be accepted. Candidate will be notified of acceptance to the program. The Professional Evaluation Application is available on online at www.aspenational.org.
  3. Complete Workshop - Candidates must complete an orientation workshop. The workshop is available online. (Optional chapter workshops may be available; please verify with local chapter chair prior to submitting your professional application.)
  4. Write 2500+ Word Technical Paper - The paper is to be completed and submitted to the Society Business Office by the matrix due date in order for the candidate to be eligible for testing. The candidate will be given an opportunity to re-submit the paper if a failing review is received.
  5. Take GEK Exam - Candidates should schedule this four hour exam with his/her proctor. The Society Business Office has to be notified of the scheduled test date so that test packets may be prepared and sent to the proctor. One re-take of the exam will be allowed.
  6. Take DST Exam - Candidates should schedule this eight hour exam with his/her proctor. The Society Business Office has to be notified of the scheduled test date so that test packets may be prepared and sent to the proctor. One re-take of the exam will be allowed.

  • Questions & Problems: If a test in your specific discipline is not available, you are required to write 100 discipline specific questions and 2 problems following specific guidelines. The candidate must submit their questions and problems according to the cycle matrix for their preferred cycle. Questions and Problems must be reviewed and accepted by the Certification Committee to satisfy the examination portion of the program. Refer to the Cycle Matrix for due dates of each cycle.
