CPE.... What's in it for me?

CPE . . . . . . . . . . . . What's in it for me?

by Paul Neuharth, CPE

"Why should I take my time to become a Certified Professional Estimator?" Most times the answer to this question is as individual as the status to which it represents. The following thoughts may help you focus on why you should become a CPE.

Personal Goals: There is nothing more gratifying than meeting the challenge, fighting the obstacles and reaching the plateau of success. Reaching goals and receiving recognition for our achievements is what we strive for. Becoming a CPE can give you this satisfaction, and the recognition that you are at the top of your field.

Somewhere deep inside each of us, we want recognition by our peers as the best at what we do. We want others to view us as knowledgeable and experienced in our profession. We want to be known as the experts of our field. Becoming a CPE gives credence to others within our profession as an Estimator that attains the knowledge and abilities required to be a competent construction estimator. The ASPE Certification Program is the only program that can attest to these abilities.

Professional Recognition: Many companies want employees that continue gaining knowledge in their specific field. Employers can use employee professional recognition in marketing plans. They can show clients that their estimators are certified professionals and highly trained individuals. Clients will have more faith in the numbers knowing that the estimate was prepared by a certified professional.

Recognition as a CPE could also mean promotions within your company and the opportunity for additional salary compensation. Searching for a position with another firm? Think of how Certified Professional Estimator would look on y .our resume. What would a perspective employer decide when looking at two candidates with equivalent qualifications except one person has CPE credentials? Who do you think would get the job?

State Recognition: Just as Architects and Professional Engineers are required by state agencies to be certified in their professions, Estimators are also being added to this list. The State of California has recognized Professional Estimators, and estimates for the State must be prepared by, or under the direct supervision of, a Certified Professional Estimator. The states of New Jersey and Missouri are also places where certified estimators have been -required. As with other certifications, in the years ahead, the requirement to be certified will be a requirement of many states. It's just a matter of time. Do you want to be in the forefront and prepared, or pulling up the rear and trying to catch up?

Society Recognition: Certified Professional Estimators are the backbone of our Society. They are many of the Society leaders and are looked upon with distinction. CPE's are held in high regard among the Society membership as the noble statesmen of the profession. High self-esteem is key to the success of any venture.

Do I have to be a knowledgeable and competent estimator to become a CPE? ….. Yes. Does it take some work and effort to become a CPE? ….. Yes. Will it benefit me if I become a CPE? ….. Yes. What value would there be in be coming a CPE unless it took effort, knowledge and abilities to achieve this goal? It would be worth nothing! Set your goals high and work for success. Reach for the plateau and become an ASPE Certified Professional Estimator.
